Warsaw, 19th century. Wealthy young merchant Stanisław Wokulski falls in love with aristocrat Izabela Łęcka. Class gulf. He trades his heart for social climbing, hoping aristocratic doors open. Old clerk Rzecki dreams of bygone ideals, loyal to a vanished era. Around them: a living city. Shopkeepers, schemers, hungry students, salon ladies. Wokulski rises through trade, war profits, science. Yet Izabela's world sees only a parvenu, never a man. He builds, wins, loses, rebuilds. Doubts gnaw. Is he a puppet, pulled by love, society, his own obsessions? Economic ambition collides with romantic defeat. A portrait of a nation on the brink of modernity, where the heart pays the highest price.
